We buy this coffee from Coffee Quest, an importing company that has been involved on the ground with the Association La Victoria in Santa Maria since 2016. The Santa Maria community is remote and had been closed off to the rest of the country due to Guerrilla activity in the region. This also meant that the National Coffee Federation did not make it up to Santa Maria and promote their inferior tasting varieties of Colombia and Castillo: this has turned out to be a good thing for us! The growers have stuck to growing almost exclusively Caturra, Typica and Bourbon at very high altitudes making for an excellent cup profile. For the 2018 harvest Coffee Quest rented a warehouse, set-up a cupping lab and hired a cupper, who cupped through every single sample that was delivered to the buying station. From there, lots were separated based off of cup score. In addition, several of the youngest members of the association are getting involved with internships at the buying station, learning how to cup and grade green coffee. This is a lot that represents the higher scoring lots from the association, all blended together. Coffee Quest pays the highest prices in town for 85+ scoring coffees, and we couldn’t be happier to be apart of sharing the fruit of their labor.
