Kayanza is one of the most reputable growing regions of Burundi. Soils are rich and volcanic, while the growing conditions are optimal year round. Gratien Nankwahombaye has been the manager at Gakenke since 2013. The mill has 2,685 registered farmer members who deliver fresh cherry to the mill during harvest. Most farmers have about 300 coffee trees. Gakenke has 12 collection centers which enables more farmers on the outskirts to deliver their cherry, it also keeps quality high as the cherry is processed quickly before sitting for too long.
